Jasmine Sampson | Peak Performance Coach

Many people think that the effects of a Traumatic Event just have to be lived with. This is definitely not so and I thought it would be a good idea to have a quick look at some options for recovery.

A quick search of the Internet reveals that the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) covers a range of symptoms that fall broadly into three categories: intrusive memories, emotional numbness and anxiety or heightened emotional arousal.

Symptoms of intrusive memories include:
•    Flashbacks, or reliving the traumatic event
•    Upsetting dreams about the traumatic incident

Symptoms of avoidance and emotional numbing may include:
•    Trying to avoid thinking or talking about what happened
•    Feeling emotionally numb
•    Avoiding activities you once enjoyed
•    Hopelessness about the future
•    Memory problems
•    Trouble concentrating
•    Difficulty maintaining close relationships

Symptoms of anxiety and increased emotional arousal may include:
•    Irritability or anger
•    Overwhelming guilt or shame
•    Self-destructive behaviour, such as drinking too much
•    Sleeping difficulties
•    Being easily startled or frightened
•    Hearing or seeing things that aren't there

The symptoms of PTSD can come and go. You may have more symptoms when things are stressful in general, or when you run into reminders of what you went through.

There is a widespread belief that the effects of trauma have to be accepted, perhaps managed with medication. In my experience this is not true.  Here is a quick summary of the most effective modalities that I have found and used to relieve the effects of trauma for myself and my clients.

One of the most widely known modalities is Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as EFT or Tapping Technique. This has been around several years now, is widely used and highly respected. I was interested to see it listed amongst leading new edge therapies at http://www.psychotherapy-center.com/leading_edge_therapies.html

There are a wealth of EFT-related materials on YouTube and elsewhere online. I have been most impressed with the work coming out of http://www.thetappingsolution.com/ and http://www.tapping.com/ seems to have a comprehensive and simple training video series and a useful explanation of the science.

Different practitioners may teach slight variations of the points to be tapped – all seem to work. It can be used in a wide variety of ways, and to relieve the stress of an incident as it occurs. For example a colleague used it to relieve the pain and stress of her younger sister while she awaited treatment for a broken arm.

One of  my favourite processes is ZPoint which can be found at http://zpointforpeace.com/

ZPoint was created by Canadian Grant Connolly in response to his own search for healing following a breakdown 10 years ago.

I have used ZPoint for several years with great success for myself, my family and my clients. This is an excellent global modality for gathering up all of the leftover emotions that can remain after a traumatic event and successfully and simply clearing them. It’s easy to learn and use on one’s own at home.

Both EFT and Z Point can be used for a wide variety of life experiences apart from  trauma and are worth learning as part of a comprehensive self care system.

The newcomer to my modality toolkit is Tapas Acupressure Technique, also known as TAT. You can download a free self-help booklet at  http://www.tatlife.com/booklet  This modality is particularly helpful to erase the emotions from a specific event.

Whether it is workplace bullying or something else that happens in life, the most important thing to remember is that the symptoms of a traumatic event can be overcome with the right help and support.

My recommendation is that you try some of these modalities at home on your own, and if you find that the distressing symptoms still continue, consult these websites for an experienced practitioner.

As a coach, I assume that the best answers are already inside you. Rather than focusing on external things to motivate you, I help you connect with the wisdom and purpose that are already inside you. I teach you how to listen to yourself and set your external goals accordingly.
