Q I am having issues with halotosis for the past year. My GP thought it was oral thrush but now it seems not. What can I do about it. I have really bad breath and a white coating on my tongue which at the back looks yellow. I have experienced more plaque as well lately. Not sure what to do... please help.

A Along with 'helps" below - How is the condition of your teeth? Do you need a dental check up? Also how is your water intake? at least 6 glasses a day spread out - small amounts often are better than a whole lot at once. Take heart - symptoms are always an indication for us to sort out the imbalances in our body, and your intent to restore your health will bring its reward.
A I agree with the prognosis everyone else here has made. It is most likely coming from your digestive health. There is an ayrevedic suggestion for clearing and cleaning your mouth while you are addressing the underling digestive problem. This utilises cold pressed sesame oil. Place a couple of tablespoons or more in your mouth. Swish it around your mouth for as long as you can be bothered and then spit it out. This helps to cleanse and detoxify your mouth. Good luck and good health.

A A few suggestions for you: Increase your fibres. Take lemon juice in water first thing in the morning. Brush teeth with 50/50 salt and baking soda. Gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so the breath stays fresh throughout the day. Cut down on processed foods (which are high in both grains and sugars/high fructose corn syrup), as they cause bad odour-causing bacteria to grow out of control. Pranic Healing has been known to help in this area as well, you can check my website www.rainbowmountaintherapies.co.nz. All the best and good luck. Faye

A According to your tongue description, you might have poor digestion and constipation, that lead to halotosis. Can use acupuncture or Chinese herbs to regulate the function of your digestive system, and also need a through review about your lifestyles to find the causes of your complaint as well.

A Hi there. Halitosis can come from the mouth or stomach/intestines. I've also had clients who's bad breath came from a "stagnant" infection in their sinuses.
To get you on the road to wellness, I'd recommend you get do a cleanse initially (we have "Perfect Cleanse" which is a very easy & popular 10-day program - see our website)
If that doesn't sort it, then you're well advised to see a naturopathic consultant.

All the best,
Sharon

A Hello there, its very embarrassing having bad breath, leaves us feeling self conscious and worried what people will think. A I agree with the diagnoses below. Sounds like your diet is overloaded with carbohydrates. Reduce sugars and simple starches (flour-based products like bread, cakes and pastries) and increase green and coloured vegetables, and protein (good quality meat, fish and eggs). I suggest you use either 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar in water or a dose of Swedish Bitters in water half an hour before each meal. Take a good quality probiotic supplement daily (follow the instructions on the label).
I have a digital book that will help. For more info contact me through my website www.youressentialwellbeing.co.nz

A You probably need to look a little further into your general digestion. The white coating indicates some form stagnation/imbalance in your intestines. Do you get digestive symptoms as well? Bloating, gas etc? Do you have regular bowel movements - at least once per day? You would benefit from seeing a Naturopath to assess this side of things for you and perhaps look at dietary changes to ease the problem. Also do you mouth breathe? This can have detrimental effects to your oral health and would be affecting your bacterial balance there. Learning some yoga breathing techniques such as alternate nostril breathing and consciously breathing through your nose whenever you remember could be helpful for you. If you would like to follow this approach up, we are located in Milford, Auckland. Kind regards, Jillian

A Hi from a Ortho-Bionomy perspective I would balance you gut along with lymphatic check to release the toxins that maybe causing the imbalance. On a different note check for candida levels, most commonly done through a Kinesiologist. Hope this is helpful. Vicki Atlas Health Clinic Wellington.
