Q I often find myself binge eating chocolates, especially just days before my period. Is there a reason for that and what can I do to stop? I find that will power itself is not enough.

A It appears that your binge eating is related to your hormones. Have you had your oestrogene level tested? Have you noted exactly when before your period? A week before or just a day before?
May I suggest that you give a go to Nutri Puncture to assist you in regulating your hormone level.

A Have you tried dark chocolate ? It's only the sugar in chocolate that's not healthy. The cocoa is actually quite beneficial - high in magnesium and antioxidants. You may also find that dark chocolate satisfies your cravings better than regular chocolate so you need to eat less of it. You want at least 70% cocoa and can get up to 85%. The higher the percentage the better.
Vitamin B6 sometimes reduces PMS symptoms, including cravings. Liver, sunflower seeds and pistachio nuts are good sources of vitamin B6 (but you should not eat more than 4kg of liver per year or you will overdose on vitamin A).
Chocolate cravings can also result from low magnesium. Most nuts and seeds are good sources of magnesium, including almonds, pumpkin seeds (also a good source of zinc), and sunflower seeds.
For best results, I would see a naturopath for a full assessment, to determine which foods and/or supplements would be most beneficial for you.

A Hi there - good on you for reaching out!
PMS comes in many forms including "PMS-Cravings". All forms imply some form of imbalance which can become worse or broader than the norm depending on your normal diet and the choices you make when you're bingeing. I suggest a nutritional assessment as your first step - and hang on to that will-power - its a good determinant of success on a prescribed regime!
Good luck.

A Hi, In our experience this is a very normal craving and unfortunately willpower will have to do the job. One question, do you have have quite bad PMS /PMT. If you do, from our experience it is directly linked to this binge eating. So if you would like to NOT suffer from that remember that reducing your chocolate intake will help. Cheers Chris
