WHAT EXACTLY IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Chiropractic Therapy | The Wellness DirectoryThe fundamental philosophy of Chiropractic therapy is that a misalignment of the spine, displaces the nerve signals from the brain, causing numerous health problems. These misalignments are referred to as “subluxations”.  To restore these misalignments of the spine or other bones, chiropractic therapy traditionally involves physical manipulations and adjustments, resulting in re-establishing flexibility to the spine and bones.  Moreover this release of stress on the nerves and nervous system permits the body to heal any damaged areas, due to the energy flow working properly.

Within a chiropractic clinic it is commonplace to find the therapist using massage and ultra sound equipment, as the chiropractors additional concern is with the condition of the client’s muscles and surrounding tissue.  The application of these treatments encourages the muscles, which are holding the bones in misalignment to relax.  Generally chiropractic therapy can be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatments.  In addition acupuncture, nutritional supplements, homeopathy or massage may also be used in accompaniment to this therapy.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM CHIROPRACTIC SESSIONS

The initial consultation with a Chiropractor can take up to an hour.  Within this time the Chiropractor will discuss and discover any important medical or family history, current lifestyle, emotional status and your overall general health. To enable the Chiropractor to make a diagnosis a physical examination is required, this may involve standing, sitting, walking and other movements that the therapist deems necessary.  To aid a Chiropractor to reach a diagnosis, conventional methods, such as x-rays can be used, whilst to check reflexes a reflex hammer is frequently used.  The length of your treatment is dependent upon the diagnosis of the problem.  However at the end of your initial consultation the Chiropractor should be able to ascertain how many treatments are required.

In addition to physical manipulation the Chiropractor may also suggest establishing an active rehabilitation programme involving, physical exercise and endurance, which would assist and aid symptoms. The manipulative technique, used on the spine or pelvis, which is typically performed whilst the client is lying down or in a certain position, is based on short, fast forceful motions, termed as high velocity thrusts, which may result in a clicking sound being heard, akin to knuckles being stretched.  These movements are performed, without using strength or force, but through utilizing skill to produce safe and successful adjustments, designed to realign and mobilize the spine.  Chiropractic treatment is a natural therapy and has been proven to be a valuable method towards better health.

FINDING A SUITABLE CHIROPRACTOR

It is wise to carry out some research and select a therapist who is either a member of, or accredited by, an association or professional body such as the NZ Chiropractor Association. Chiropractors are obligated to a code of ethics and procedure that determines the therapy is carried out in a suitable and safe environment.  These regulations also guarantee a specialist who has undergone certifiable training and receives professional upskilling.

The Wellness Directory provides a ready-made referral list of certified Chiropractors within your region.  We fully encourage you to do some independent research by checking out individual credentials, i.e. experience, training, qualifications, relevant client feedback and so forth.
