"I've got a pinched nerve"

Chances are very slim that you have actually pinched a nerve.

If you experience that very sharp, intense, pinching type pain which might travel to another area of the body, it is very likely that the nerve is most likely involved, but not being “pinched.”

“Well, if the nerve isn’t pinched, what has happened to it?”

More than likely the nerve is being irritated. This could mean it is being stretched, chafed, rubbed, choked, or even touched by adjacent spinal structures. Nerve tissue is very sensitive so it doesn’t take much to upset it. (Try this experiment: Rest a $2 coin on the back of your hand and see how long it takes before that spot becomes irritated purely from the pressure of the coin on nerves running through the back of your hand.)

When the nerve is upset or irritated the signals which travel through the nerve are disrupted and you will typically experience symptoms, often pain. Numbness and pins and needles are also common symptoms associated with disruption of nerve signals.

When nerve signals are disrupted, messages from the brain to the body or from the body to the brain via the compromised nerve are not delivered appropriately. This could mean a delay in the message getting to its destination, not getting there at all, or even getting there too fast. The end result is that body part serviced by the nerve will not work as well as it should because it is not getting or sending the correct information at the correct time.

This could mean that a muscle doesn’t fire when it should, hindering athletic performance. Or the muscle fires too much, resulting in muscle spasm. Or that an internal organ doesn’t function as efficiently as it could resulting in loss of control, e.g. constipation, incontinence, reflux. The effects can be more widespread: lack of coordination, a sense of disconnection, or just poor health.
Chiropractic adjustments to the spine help remove the sources of nerve irritation. Once the nerve, or nervous system is working properly your body can effectively use its amazing built in ability to repair and heal. Without drugs or surgery.
