Q Are neck massages good for severe neck pain? My dad recently had severe neck pain and he was given muscle relaxers as well as some medicine to curb some of the pain. For the holidays, I was thinking about purchasing a therapeutic neck and shoulder massage for him. Would this help? Cheers.

A HI there

If your dad had an accident of some sort, ConTact C.A.R.E is brilliant at unhooking impact injury. Gentle, fast, safe and effetive. If it is stress related then consider some NLP to clear that and coach some more effective strategies for the future. If its movement habit related Feldenkrais will address the programming of the movement that in a way that structural alignment may not explicitly address - more like learning or coaching for when the straightening doesnt do it.

A Hi and thanks for your enquiry. Assuming that your dad has been examined successfully by the medical fraternity, massage if done by a gentle professional, I doubt can do harm. This may relieve the pain, but doesn't address the subtle, deepset cause. Alexander Technique is a learning; address the real cause and the balanced co-ordination resumes. See more on www.alexandertechnique.co.nz/benefits/back-and-neck for more info and a practitioner in your area.

A I agree with most of the above answers to your question, procede with caution. I personally would apply some Bowen therapy to the upper back and neck as Bowen therapy is an extremly gentle , non invasive treatment, and will allow the body to realign and heal itself. I practice both from Wellington and the Kapiti coast. My phone number for both places is 04 4727598. All the best.

A Hi there, thanks for your enquiry. I am SCENAR therapist. SCENAR is a great modality for pain relief. Like the comments before, maybe have his doctor or natural therapist assess his neck and spine areas. SCENAR is a hand held device which works on the person's skin sending messages to the brain to generate neuropeptides the key biochemicals needed by the body to heal itself. If you would like to know more call me on 0274 741 932 Jan Stein.

A Hi and thank you for your enquiry. Dependant on the circumstances surrounding your father's complaint, type of pain and any referral sensations will indicate type of treatment appropriate to help him. Our therapists here would assess the neck and shoulder regions, including specific test to rule out neural involvement and to make sure the condition can be treated appropriately and safely. If there are signs that indicate his condition is out of our scope of practice we will happily suggest referring him onto to another health professional within our professional network. All our therapist here are of the highest qualifications, please don't hesitate to call me (Doug) on 021 543 302 or the clinic on 09 826 5516

A Hi. I think it's important that someone who can assess the alignment of the spine (such as an osteopath or chiropractor) is an important first step. Followed immediately by massage therapy and/or neuromuscular therapy to help release the built-up tension and re-educte the muscles. Its is important that if a therapy that manipulates the spine is used, that ONE treatment should be enough if followed by regular massage to help "hold" the alignment. Excessive manipulation can stretch the ligaments which can't be undone. Best wishes for your dad.

A Hi, Almost certainly a neck massage would help. Like the other comments here I suggest you make sure you get that done by a qualified therapist so a member of Massage NZ is a good start. What would be better would be to find out why he has the problem, sitting watching TV in the same place too much or head down reading a lot and a qualified therapist is going to look for the problems cause and fix that as well. Cheers Chris

A sure, if the practitioner is competent. If they're not, they could do some serious damage.

I recommend practitioners who are members of the Massage Association of New Zealand or someone who does Ortho-Bionomy. Ortho-Bionomy is very gentle, safe and effective. There are a few practitioners listed on their website, although I know there are a bunch of great practitioners (myself included) who aren't on it.
