There are many uses for eucalyptus oil; it can be used for arthritis, bronchitis, cold sores, colds, coughing, fever, flu, poor circulation, and sinusitis. It is widely used for its medicinal properties as it is antibacterial, antiviral and helps in removing all type of infections. Eucalyptus can be used to treat skin irritations such as insect bites, blisters and other wounds.

Eucalyptus essential oil comes from many varieties of the Eucalyptus tree (up to 500 different varieties), the most commonly known is Eucalyptus Globulus which  has a clear, thin appearance that provides a fresh, cooling, and soothing application with a soft earthy aroma.

Eucalyptus radiata comes from the narrow leaf Eucalyptus tree and is slightly gentler, warming and drying in its action with a fruity aroma making it excellent for use with children's coughs. It is superior as an anti-microbial oil and has been studied for its action against viruses. Eucalyptus Radiata oil can be applied externally to relieve fevers that arise from infectious diseases through the use of cool compresses applied to the forehead, back of neck, over the kidneys and pelvic region.

Making a hot compress

To about a pint of water as hot as you are able to cope with, add about 4 drops of your selected essential oil to it. Place a small, folded piece of material, bandage or towel on top of the water until it is soaked. Wring out any excess liquid and place it over the area to be treated. Cover the warm compress with a another towel on top or bandage it onto the body. Replace with a new compress as soon as it has cooled to body temperature.

Making a cold compress

Use ice or refrigerated water  instead of the hot water and the same method as above but replace it when it has heated up to body temperature.

Use only a small amount of Eucalyptus otherwise it may produce a chilling effect.

Eucalyptus is a powerful antiseptic agent, its powerful germicidal properties effectively kill staphylococcus bacteria and have been used to treat tuberculosis so is excellent to use as an antiseptic gargle by adding up to three drops of essential oil to a glass of water.

If you are feeling a little blocked up or just feel like a little pick me up over winter try these tips using eucalyptus to help. For blocked nose or sinusitis simply massage a small drop of eucalyptus oil (mixed into a teaspoon of base oil) onto your temples and on your “third eye” or where your nose meets your forehead, being careful to avoid contact with the eyes.

Eucalyptus oil will also provide relief to sore muscles when added to massage oil.

Essential oils are very concentrated plant extract and therefore should not be used neat on the skin. If pregnant seek advice from a qualified aromatherpist.
