Lumbago is mild or severe pain of the lower back. The pain can come on suddenly, for instance after trauma to the back, or can be present over a longer period of time (a sign of a chronic disorder such as a slipped disc or osteoporosis). Symptoms include pain in the back radiating to the buttocks and legs, restricted movement, tension and spasms in the back muscles.
