So back to how to create more happiness...

Most people keep waiting and wishing for happiness, or put off happiness until they’re successful or until they achieve some goal, which means they limit their happiness.

So how can you start to create more happiness in your life now?

Here are 5 very short habits that take only a few minutes of each day. If you do them every day, they will not only improve your levels of happiness, but also improve your health and your mood, reduce stress and anxiety and increase your coping strategies.

1. Three Acts of Gratitude

Spend two minutes a day scanning the world for three new things you’re grateful for. Be specific by using the word ‘because’ eg. if you say, “I’m grateful for my son,” it doesn’t work so well, but if you say “I’m grateful for my son because he hugged me today, which means I’m loved regardless”, the specific detailing gets the brain wired in a new pattern of optimism. It’s helpful to have a daily journal, or book, to write down your Acts of Gratitude. This will really support and cement these new patterns.

2. Double It!

For two minutes a day, think of one positive experience that’s occurred during the past 24 hours. Highlight each detail in your mind as you can remember. It works because the brain can’t tell the difference between imaginary or real, visualization or actual experience. So you’ve just doubled a meaningful experience in your brain.

3. Make Exercise Fun

Each day do 15 minutes of cardiovascular exercise eg. walking so your heart is pumping... Exercise works because the brain records a victory, and that cascades to the next activity.

4.  Breathe

Do two minutes per day of deep connective breathing. This will improve your level of happiness, keeping you calm, keeping your emotions in check, and dropping stress and anxiety levels too.

5.  Acts of Kindness

This final habit is one of the most powerful ones. For two minutes each day, write a two-minute positive email or text praising or thanking one person you know. And do it for a different person each day. This action not only makes the person receiving the message and you feel great, but it also increases your social connection which is the greatest predictor of long-term happiness.

“We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.”

Cheers for now
