Quite simply, Jin Shin Jyutsu is a way to balance our life energy and achieve optimum health.  It shows us how to use hands-on sequences to restore emotional equilibrium, relieve pain and release the cause of both acute and chronic conditions. It can be used safely in conjunction with any other therapy or medications and can be used anywhere and at any time.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a healing art with a history of over 5,000 years and it means “the art of the creator through compassionate man”. The healing art that those words represent is based upon our own natural, innate ability to harmonise ourselves.  For thousands of years, ancient peoples used this awareness to heal both themselves and others. 

Over times this awareness was all but forgotten until a Japanese sage named Jiro Murai rediscovered Jin Shin Jyutsu in the early part of the twentieth century. His 3 key students included Mary Burmeister (a Japanese American),  her father and Haruki Kato.  Mary Burmeister brought the art from Japan to America in 1954 and through her teachings, books and thousands of classes held around the world this awareness continues to grow.  Today, over 13,000 practice this art with the main office in Scotsdale, Arizona.


During the session you remain clothed and lie face up on a cushioned treatment table; there is no massage or manipulation of muscles involved. It is adviseable to wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Your Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner uses a system that employs 26 points, referred to as safety energy locks, on your body located along energy pathways (known as meridians).  Holding these points in sequence reestablishes the flow of energy throughout your body. This can bring about relief for any type of stress whether it is mental, emotional, physical or spiritual. Your practitioner will also guide you on what holds you can do yourself away from the sessions in order to improve your wellbeing. During the treatment you can expect to have an increased sense of wellbeing, deep relaxation and renewed energy, as well as relief from the symptoms of stress related disorders.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a powerful and effective tool to relax and reduce stress and pain in our daily lives.  It is a very supportive method, co-operating with other medical and natural therapies. The response to a session is unique to each individual. Conditions of muscular tension are generally the quickest to resolve. The more chronic a condition the longer it will take to get better, though improvement in symptoms may be almost immediate.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is also excellent for preparing for pregnancy and during pregnancy. As the Art works with the subtle energies of your body it can ease pregnancy discomforts as well as support the development of your unborn child.


It is wise to carry out some research and select a therapist who is either a member of, or accredited by, an association or professional body such as the New Zealand Association of Jin Shin Jyutsu. Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioners are obligated to a code of ethics and procedure that determines the therapy is carried out in a suitable and safe environment.  These regulations also guarantee a specialist who has undergone certifiable training and receives professional upskilling.
