ORTHO-BIONOMY FACTFILE

‘The corrective application of the Natural Laws of Life’

Ortho-Bionomy has three major principals:

Osteopathy:  “the rule of the artery is supreme”; structure governs function;
Homeopathy:  the effective dose is the smallest dose; “less is more,”
Martial arts:  following the path of least resistance rather than opposing.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ORTHO-BIONOMY?

Ortho-Bionomy | The Wellness DirectoryOrtho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive system of healing which is helpful in addressing many pain and stress conditions. Developed by Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls, a British osteopath, Ortho-Bionomy supports the self-correcting capacity of the person through the use of gentle movement and positioning of the body as well as light compression into the joints. Ortho-Bionomy stimulates long-lasting changes by re-educating the client’s body so that it can effectively maintain balance and optimal functioning on its own.

Whilst Ortho-Bionomy is effective as a stand-alone modality it is highly complementary to any other treatments that the client may be receiving such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and physiotherapy as well as other medical treatment. This work does not interfere with any other modalities or treatment protocols.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM
ORTHO-BIONOMY SESSIONS

Your initial consultation may last between 45 to 60 minutes.  Follow up sessions are shorter and are generally 30 to 45 minutes in duration.  During a treatment session, the client lies on a massage table, preferably wearing loose and comfortable clothing, while the practitioner gently positions the body to create ease and comfort around areas that are painful, tight or restricted. While gently using very light compression or traction to assist the nervous system this will stimulate the self-corrective reflexes that are present in the body thereby enabling the release of the pain and tension patterns that are present and causing problems.

These releases are accompanied by realignment and re-education of the joints, muscles and nerves. Mental and emotional tension caused or exacerbated by the pain and imbalances also disappear at the same time, creating a feeling of lightness and well-being.

Ortho-Bionomy sessions incorporate body re-education techniques such as postural awareness exercises, isometric or isotonic exercises to restore muscle tone and signifcantly increase the range of movement available within the joints. Often self-care exercises are given for clients to do at home to accelerate the healing process.Each Ortho-Bionomy session last between 30 - 60 minutes. Many people chose a series of sessions to help chronic back, neck, joint and muscle problems or pain/stress syndromes. Usually there is no need for more than one treatment per week even in when treating the most acute problems.

After receiving Ortho-Bionomy sessions clients report experiencing pain relief, increased range of motion, greater ease of motion, better structural realignment and postural balance, increased relaxation, more efficient functioning, faster recovery times from injuries, a greater sense of self- empowerment, increased vitality and emotional balance, and an increased sense of wholeness and wellbeing.

FINDING A QUALIFIED ORTHO-BIONOMIST

It is wise to carry out some research and select a therapist who is either a member of, or accredited by, an association or professional body such as The Association of NZ Ortho-Bionomists Inc.  This ensures that they meet the competencies required to practice physiotherapy and the therapy is carried out in a suitable and safe environment.  These regulations also guarantee a specialist who has undergone certifiable training and receives professional upskilling.

The Wellness Directory provides a ready-made referral list of certified Practitioners within your region.  We fully encourage you to do some independent research by checking out individual credentials, i.e. experience, training, qualifications, relevant client feedback and so forth.
