WHAT EXACTLY IS REIKI?

Reiki HealingReiki, pronounced ‘ray-kee’, is the vital life energy which flows through all living things and which can be activated for the purpose of healing. The word Reiki is composed of two Japanese words - Rei meaning ‘God's wisdom or the higher power’ and Ki, which translates as ‘life force energy’. Reiki practitioners hold the belief that every individual has the capability to unite with their own healing energy, enabling that individual to reinforce and support their life energy, ki, and that of others.

Thus Reiki is actually ‘spiritually guided life force energy’. Ki is equivalent to ‘qi’ in traditional Chinese medicine.

It is blockages in the flow of this vital life-force energy or ki, which is believed to cause illness.  Reiki practitioners who are ‘attuned’ to this energy are able to transmit it through their hands into the client and remove any blockages thus allowing healing to occur.   In this respect, Reiki is a holistic therapy, as it addresses the body as a whole; emotions, mind, body and spirit.  The additional affects of Reiki can be deeply enriching through sensations of security, peace, wellbeing and relaxation. Through Reiki’s capability to support the body’s own ability to heal, it is a safe straightforward and natural method to promote wellbeing.  Additionally at the foundation of Reiki therapy is the concept that the source of ill health is within the sub conscious, hence the basis of Reiki’s holistic approach.

The therapy may help to improve many physical and emotional conditions including addictions, depression and pain management.  Treatment often works alongside conventional medicine in order to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM REIKI SESSIONS

Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes although the length of treatment will vary depending on your condition. You will lie fully clothed on a padded table in a warm, comfortable room.  Music is often played to calm and relax the body.

Prior to treatment your therapist will feel and ‘scan’ your energy field by placing their hands over your body.  This will help the therapist assess and identify energy blockages in your body that need healing.  Skilled therapists can readily find these blockages because their hands feel hot or tingly as they come across them.

They will then place their hands above or lightly touch specific parts of your body or chakras; places where the energy flows through.  These areas include the abdomen, legs, back and feet.  While the healing energy is being directed to a certain area of the body, the soft touch needs to be maintained for anywhere up to twenty minutes if it is a problem area.  During this time you may feel a sense of relaxation as the blockages are eased and energy is restored to where your body needs it most, further permitting the stress levels within the body to ease.  Reiki therapy consistently travels to the areas required to ease blockage, whether it may be spiritual, physical or mental.

Your therapist will determine the number and frequency of Reiki sessions at the initial appointment.  One or two sessions are usually enough for acute problems such as stress reduction whereas long-term treatment may be recommended for more chronic conditions.

The treatment process is considered a healing experience for both the Reiki practitioner and the client.  The practitioner often feels recharged and refreshed after a healing session.

FINDING A QUALIFIED REIKI THERAPIST/TEACHER

Most people find Reiki deeply relaxing and enjoy the release of tension and pain throughout the body.  It is also extremely safe and effective when carried out by a qualified therapist. It is wise to carry out some research and select a member of, or accredited by, an association or professional body such as Reiki New Zealand Inc.  Reiki therapists are obligated to a code of ethics and procedure that determines the therapy is carried out in a suitable and safe environment.  These regulations also guarantee a specialist who has undergone certifiable training and receives professional upskilling.
