Q Hello, A elderly family member who is 91 is in a lot of pain from arthritis and a recent pelvis fracture after a fall. She is currently on 8 paracetamol for the pain but it is not helping. She is very delicate and sensitive to touch and can be quite sore after just relaxing massage. Any suggestions for treatment for her? Much love and gratitude!

A Hello, Ortho-Bionomy may be of help for this elderly relative with the after affects of the fall, Ortho-Bionomy has the philosophy of no pain to release pain and works with the bodies own resources. The movements if any are very gentle, with the ability to use energy this may mean no movement needed externally by your family member. On the arthritis front it would be a matter of allowing and improving the surrounding areas to be able to function, there fore improving blood and fluid circulation in hope to bring comfort to the areas coping with the arthritic joints. I hope this helps somewhat. regards Vicki www.atlashealth.co.nz

A Hello, I see you have had a colleague recommend (Bowtech) Bowen Therapy. This is indeed a gentle non invasive therapy very suited to the elderly to help re-balance the body which reduces the pain and discomfort. I have treated my own 91 year old mum and many other elderly folk with great effect. The website will help you find a practitioner in your locality www.bowtech.org.nz I wish you well and better health for your family member.
A Hello - you have had quite some advice already - I will come from a nutritional perspective:
- has your family member had a vitamin D level check? The goal should be a level between 80-100 as research has shown that low vitamin D seems to make people more sensitive to pain. In addition, it's needed for strong bones.
- the solanaceae family - especially tomatoes - can aggravate arthritis in some people. This family also includes potatoes, eggplant & capsicum, so it might be advantageous to remove them all for a while.
- If the paracetamol is not helping then best not to take it - it is harsh on the liver at that dose (is higher than the recommended amount and at 91 the ability to detoxify it is probably not 100%)
- Alternatives for the pain: Green Lipped Mussel Extract, Glucosamine + Chondroitin and perhaps some herbal medicine - I suggest seeing a herbalist or naturopath to get a good herbal blend and quality supplements.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you want more assistance. Kind regards, Sharon

A I can understand how painful it must be to have pain from the fall as well as arthritis. Homeopathy can be extremely useful for pain from arthritis for elderly people. However, there are several remedies indicated for arthritis - which one it is depends on the person's constitution, overall state of health and the exact and (more specific) symptoms. I suggest you make an appointment to see us at Lotus Natural Therapies 0800FEELWELL. Best wishes

A Arthritis is generally caused by dirty energy sitting in the energy fields and organs of the body and this can be removed to give comfort by having a pranic healing which has simple techniques that are used without touching the body at all to remove this before adding fresh 'Prana'. You are most welcome to contact me for more information on this and if you are based in Auckland we have a free clinic that you can go to. I live in the Hamilton area and my details are on the web: www.rainbowmountaintherapies.co.nz. I also work with skype from private homes to save travelling. Pranic Healing also helps with fractures, broken bones and many concerns of the body. Warm Regards Faye Taylor

A Reiki which is a very gentle energy healing would be helpful for this lady. As she is sensitive to touch, Reiki can be done just above the body so as not touching the body itself. If you are not in the Pukekohe area like I am then I suggest you go onto the Reiki NZ Inc site and pick up a Reiki Practitioner who is in your area. It would certainly be something for her to try, as Reiki can help pain, anxiety, stress and great for recuperation after injuries and surgery.
